The Beastie Boys Sample Source Collection

Links updated 12.14.12

The collection has been updated with new tracks, higher quality versions, and better edits of previously released tracks. If you've downloaded this collection prior to February 2012, delete it and replace it with this one, trust me; this is the fresh-ass-shit!

If you're new here, I've sourced and tracked down damn near every song that has ever been sampled by the Beastie Boys from Licensed to Ill up until To The 5 Boroughs, and all points in between. This has been an ongoing project since 1998 and although it will never be 100% complete, this is probably as close as it gets. As it stands, the only 'source' that I wasn't able to track down was Modern Dynamic Physical Fitness Activities by Ed Durlacher, which was sampled in Body Movin', but if I ever stumble upon it, rest assured that I will add it to the collection. Likewise, if you have this album and would like to assist with the quest for the holy grail, please contact me!

Man, you did it! This shit'll be off the fuckin chain to listen to! I'm a Beastie fan from way back and have got a lot of samples of my own, but this definitely takes the cake. So I guess you passed on the Robert Goulet record? haha Can't say I blame you. OK buddy I'ma get downloading. Thank you SO much for your hard work. You're labor of love will be thoroughly enjoyed here I assure you.

^ Yeah man, I wasn't 100% on the Goulet record to begin with, but I'm content with things as is. Enjoy the music!!!

What an amazing post! I have been gathering Beastie Boys samples for years now, but I haven't gotten to this level yet. In my opinion, this is the greatest post of the year. Thanks for all the hard work and dedication that you put into this.

I write for a blog called Ear Fuzz as well as my own called Eclectic Grooves. I have an ongoing post on Ear Fuzz called "Anatomy of a Sample" where I dissect the song into the parts that were sampled. I did one on Shake Your Rump from Paul's Boutique. If you're interested in checking it out, you can find it here:

holee shit. i'd say i STARTED looking for something like these (ESPECIALLY paul's boutique, after the fabled Annotated Sample List left me wanting more!) a year or two ago, but it was immediately apparent that they did not yet exist, and so i stopped looking. then i stumble across this fresh post- you've obviously been hard at work and i'm sure i'm not the only one you've just dumped a tremendous gift upon, one that is rare and needed! Thank you so much for all of your hard work! This is an amazing catalog of one of the best at sampling.
I did spot one that I think is missing, though. The "Ain't got no dust!" sample on "Get it Together" comes from Escape-ism by James Brown. But run through some sort electronic altering device.
Thanks again!

thank you so much! this is an astounding achievement, and I applaud the work, love and sweat you've thrown into this project! I look forward to getting turned on to songs and artists I've only heard as a fleeting sample!

You are all very welcome! Thanks for the love!

@ anon: beat sample just before segue into "Ask For Janice": "Lyrics of Fury" - Eric B and Rakim (1988)

The sample that you're referring to is the "Funky Drummer" by James Brown (which was also sampled on Lyrics of Fury).

Absolutely Stunning!!! Congrats, job well done.

That said, In Check Your Head...It should be Ted Nugent. Not Nuggent.

Seriously, though, nicely done

hehe

casiohardcore said...

Thanks aLPhajerk for the pointing out the Ted Nugent spelling typo. Normally, I'm pretty good with the spell checks and whatnot, but this one passed under my radar!

Awesome job assembling everything and huge thanks for making it so available! You are the man.

You helped me find a mutual sample used by the band Sublime (3 The Hard Way). I have a similar project for that band here:

A friend of mine played this for me the other day, and I had to seek it out! Does anyone have a working link for Licensed to Ill?

On check your head "give it up" the version included is Kc and the Sunshine band and should be an older version by Kool and the Gang. Check it out.

casiohardcore said...

@ anon: Thanks man...I don't know how in the hell I slept on that. Regardless, I added the correct version and re-upped the file! Thanks again for the correction!

Truly a labor of love! Thanks for this. Noticed that you have Johnny Jenkins rendition of Dr. John's "Walk on guilded splinters" in your Check Your Head sample source playlist. So either it's the wrong song or you need to change the name of the artist to Jenkins.

Need a pair of headphones to have a good listen, because I don't recognize the Dr. John sample.

Other sites also mention Jimi Hendrix' "Tax Payer" song as a "Pass The Mic" sample. That song is unknown to me...

casiohardcore said...

@xmnr0x23: thanks for the heads up on the "Guilded Splinters". I have no idea why I tagged it like that, but it's definitely Johnny Jenkins and not Dr. John. I've fixed the track listing. Thanks again.

BTW - I don't think Jimi/Tax Payer reference is valid either...I've seen it in quite a few places, but I'm pretty certain it's inaccurate.
