Just picked up the Magic Flight Launch Box, and if you're in-the-know and you've been thinking about getting one; do it! It's portability and stealthiness are well worth the money and despite the small size, its a solidly built piece of gear. The only thing I suggest is that you pick up a couple extra rechargeable AA NiMH batteries because, depending how frequently you medicate, they tend to go rather quickly. Alternatively, the manufacturer just released an AC power supply for the Launch Box, however that sorta stifles the portability aspect., but then again if you don't need the portability; the power supply might not be a bad investment.

Roland HD-1 + XLN Addictive Drums = Sick!

For the past few years, I've been dueling between getting another acoustic drum kit or investing in a digital kit, and whereas they both have their own pros and cons, I finally decided on going the digital route.

Say what you will, but personally I've never been overly impressed with the sounds of digital drum kits because for the most part, sure, they sounded real, but maybe a bit too sterilized for my taste. The main reason that I wanted a digital kit was for the MIDI aspect, so that I can use it as a controller within Ableton and trigger custom drum sounds via the Drum Rack, or more specifically; XLN Audio's Addictive Drums.

There's something so incredibly cool about playing 'The Funky Drummer' and using high-quality drum samples that sound like they were lifted directly from Clyde Stubblefield's trap kit; it's orgasmic perhaps, and whereas I can't speak for everyone's set-up, I have literally zero latency when using asio4all and the trigger response is eerily tight. I was a tad skeptical about the hi-hat and kick pedals, but again, the response is eerily tight. Like I said, since I'm using the kit as a MIDI controller, I will happily go on record and say the internal ten drum kits are mediocre at best. If you really want to unlock the potential of this beast, you will definitely want to use it to trigger sounds from your DAW. With that said, the only downside is that the MIDI notes cannot be edited on the kit itself and although they are the standard drum mapping, if you need to switch notes, you'll need to do it within your drum plugin.

In summation, this is a sick piece of sick and I foresee many long hours turned days banging out beats and exploring the nether regions of my rhythmic subconscious.

Akai APC-20 = Dope!

If you're not in-the-know, the Akai APC-20 is, by far, one of the dopest MIDI controllers ever made (so far). Besides the fact that it's automapped for Ableton Live, you can switch the pads into Note Mode and chromatically play your sampler, instrument, or drum pads. Needless to say, it works extremely well with Ableton's Drum Rack. For this reason alone, I decided on the APC-20 over the APC-40 since the latter curiously doesn't have this feature, although it's apparently doable via a soft-hack.

More so than anything, the APC-20 is a replacement for my M-Audio Trigger Finger, which I absolutely loved, however I quickly outgrew the four faders, and I was only using it for triggering scenes and samples in Live, and not so much for typical drum pads.

I've only had it for a few days now, and I can say that it's truly one of the best pieces of kit that I've ever purchased!

When I was a wee lad circa '83 or '84, my very first computer was the legendary Commodore 64, and not only did the sheer technology of the computer experience blow my mind, but my dad's friend had given him some really hokey x-rated games where you basically got to see pictures of naked ladies. Being the sneaky and dirty ten year old that I was, this was quite possibly the most amazing thing that I had ever seen next to brief moments of full-frontal nudity on HBO. Ever since then, those 16 bit images have been forever ingrained into my head...

To celebrate computer technology in the 80's as well as my perverted youth, I've created a very simple 4-step Photoshop Action that will make your image look like something straight off the Commodore 64.

Oh, and just so you know, this works on non-sleazy pics too....

If you have ever wanted to learn how to fly from Los Angeles to San Francisco in a Cessna 310D via IFR, then perhaps you should stop what you're doing and download this immediately!

I picked this up at a certain local thrift store for twenty-five cents and although the vinyl was a little beat up, I think I did a pretty good job on the rip as well as the clean-up. In a nutshell, the record takes you on an IFR flight from L.A. to San Francisco from the pilot's perspective. You have the standard pilot to tower dialogue as well as the occasional narrative voice, and strangely, quite a bit of silence in between. I found some decent dialogue to scratch and sample and maybe you can too....

Business Before Pleasure (Dade County Marketing 45rpm Circa 1960's)

Another strange gem unearthed from the thrift store...

In a nutshell, the narrator tells you of all the wonderful offerings that Dade County can provide to you as a business owner and highlights the obvious, but fails to mention how the city would soon become the drug epicenter of North America. It's all sunshine, great schools, and all the resources you could ever need!

I really don't have any info on this one, but my guess is that this record was distributed to out-of-state businesses in hopes of luring them to set up shop in Dade County during the business boom of the early/mid 1960's. Also, I think this 45 was supposed to be used in conjunction with a slide show of some sort because you have that distinctive cue beep running through the mix Also, and unsurprisingly, the record wasn't in the best condition, and although I did what I could to clean it up, there are a few minor skips that I just couldn't fix. It's really not a big deal, but I figured I'd let ya know. Lastly, I ripped both sides into one track...I don't why, but it just seemed to make sense at the moment.

Over the years, and with mad props to the interwebs (and a lot of like minded cats that I've met on said interwebs), I've been able to source and track down just about every sample that was ever used in any of my favorite old-school tracks, however sadly, there is one that haven't been able to figure out....

Does anybody know the sample that is used/scratched by Nemesis in Pusherman during the chorus?

Just skip to about the 1:16 mark and you can hear it scratched as the song starts (1:21 and again at 1:26) and you can hear it dropped during each break....

I saw in the thread of this video that it was a King Tee sample, but I know most of Tee's stuff and it doesn't sound familiar. If anybody out there knows, please let me know so that I can scratch this one off of my bucket list! UPDATE: Mystery Solved!!!

I don't what it was, but something about this track worked and I loved it. I picked this up a few weeks ago on vinyl, if for nothing else, the instrumental. The remix version of this song that appears on Parental Advisory's album, Ghetto Street Funk, is cool, but it pales in significance to the OG soundtrack shit.

What would a trip down Miami Bass memory lane be without name-dropping Skyywalker Records one-time reigning queen; Anquette. In 1987, Anquette along with David Hobbs (alias Mr. Mixx of the 2 Live Crew) were responsible for bringing such classics as Shake It (Do The 61st) and Throw The P to the table in true Miami Bass form.

In 1988, Anquette and her crew (dubbed The Throw The P Girls) released their first full-length LP entitled Respect. The songs range from neo-political grrl anthems such as Janet Reno (named after the one-time Florida State Attorney turned US Attorney General) that dealt with the issue of dead-beat dads to more upbeat and sample heavy joints such as Rock & Roll Y'all and Get Off Your Ass and Jam. And what would a Skyywalker album be without some sort of scratch/mix instrumental type jam? Mr. Mixx comes through on the final (if not slightly misnamed) track Anquette's Groove. Whereas this album probably made less than a blip on most radars, it's truly an essential piece of Miami's diverse musical history.

There is absolutely nothing funny about child molestation, however leave it to Gary Coleman and the cast of Diff'rent Strokes (as well as Gordon Jump formerly of WKRP in Cincinnati) to put somewhat of a satirical spin on, what would otherwise be a horrible topic.

For those that remember 1983, you will remember this as the two part episode that deals with Arnold and his pal Dudley being lured into the the overly touchy hands of Mr. Horton, the local bike shop owner. Right off the bat, Horton is so creepy with his innuendos, and to make it worse, Arnold's innuendos are almost as perverse. He befriends Arnold and together, they sip wine and eat banana splits and it's not long before Arnold introduces his friend Dudley to Mr. Horton, and almost immediately, the creepy factor rises by ten. They take off their shirts and start playing Tarzan and Horton's taking pictures of them posing, they drink more wine, thumb through a skin mag aptly titled Cutie and lastly, they watch a watch an x-rated cartoon while eating Boston Cream pies. Being the punk that he was, Arnold bailed and left Dudley to be led into a game of Neptune, King of the Sea, where apparently all you need is a lot of water, a bathtub or a shower and pills that make you feel good....or so says Mr. Horton.

Chalk this episode up to MUST SEE status because it's creepy, comical, cliche, and dead serious all at the same time.

Pointless Infoz: Marking Your Battle Records

I'm sure most of you have your methods for marking cue points on your battle records (stickers, tiny blobs of paint, self-inflicted scratches, etc), but most of these will permanently wreck the record.

Many years back, my roommate was a bartender and she had these fluorescent Bistro Markers and I remember using them to tag an old record I had. Not only did it look bad ass, but you can still play the record and it sounded fine, and furthermore; you could wipe it right off with a damp towel. Oh shit! I started using the markers to mark spots on my battle records so I could quickly find a certain "ahhh" or "freshhhhh" or maybe a nice locked groove.

The only heads up that I advise, is when you dab, do it very lightly because a little really goes along way. If the blob is too thick, flatten it with your finger and wipe off the excess. Also, I definitely don't recommend this for your all of your vinyl, but if you're like me and have quite a bit of white-label/unmarked battle records, this may help you find your sounds much quicker in the midst of a rapid-fire set.

I've never seen these on sale at office supply joints, but you can almost always find them at art supply stores (personally, I pick mine up from the A.C. Moore in Pompano) or you can order them directly from the manufacturer: Marvy Uchida.

Best Slipmats Ever Made = Frosted Plates

Over the years, I have tried just about every type of slipmats out there, and after lots of experimenting (and a decent amount of needle thrashing) I have finally found, what I consider THEE absolute best:

Basically, you get two, wicked thin, all white slipmats (Butter Rugs) and four Flying Carpets, which are thin pieces of (what feels like) semi-solid wax-paper. Throw them on your decks and your records will slide and glide like you wouldn't believe. Even your thick-ass 180 gram vinyl will easily glide with Frosted Plates. Okay, I'm starting to sound like a pitchman...but seriously; if you still keep it real and feverishly rub records against needles; you NEED these.

In simpler terms, these are the best slipmats for scratching. Trust me.

Here's the scoop...since the beginning, I have vowed to (musically) never lead you wrong when it comes to dope music and if you're not feelin' this; I'm sorry. In my opinion (but then again, who the fuck am I), Die Antwoord is like the douche of the dirty pussy that is; hip-hop circa NOW.

The next thing you know, Farrah Fawcett loses her battle with cancer...

The self-proclaimed, King of Pop Michael Jackson dies....and yeah; nobody saw that coming.

And then just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, I just learned that the pitchman of pitchmen, Billy Mays was pronounced dead just before 8am this morning.

I'm not sure what really happens when we die, but I truly hope that all those that we have lost this month can truly rest in peace.

Seventeen years later, this record has withstood the test of time and still gets used from time to time...you know; on those really special occasions. So I was in the parking lot of BJ's and I had to do a triple take when I saw the name on the side of this van. I literally stopped in my tracks and paused before I said anything because I was assumed that I was reading it wrong. Nope. Apparently, Doggie Stlyz is a mobile pet grooming company out of Boca, but sadly, they don't have a website I can link you to. Truthfuly, I want to get a dog just so I can have Doggie Stlyz come over to my house, park the van out front, and groom my pooch.

A few weeks later, I was leaving Target and I noticed this really cool cat in a scuba suit and well; it made me laugh. Granted, it's not as cool as say Doggie Stylz was, but it definitely had some clout. As per the truck, Scuba Kat is a company that comes out and cleans your boat's hull and propeller while presumably still in the water. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any sort of link for Scuba Kat otherwise I'd tell ya to check them out too.
